The only female military veteran in the Hebrew Cemetery
July 14, 1885-December 13, 1954.
Anita was born in Brownsville to Louis & Amelia Kowalski. She achieved the rank of Captain
in the US Army during WWI and was stationed at Ft. Brown and Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
Anita returned to Brownsville, becoming a schoolteacher for the Brownsville Independent
School District. She was an accomplished piano player and often played piano for programs at
Temple Beth-El.
